NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana plant that makes packaging for an adjacent Pillsbury plant will close by next summer, idling nearly 80 workers.
Sonoco recently informed the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that it will close its packaging plant in the Ohio River city of New Albany by August 2016. The company will begin laying off the plant's 76 workers in January.
The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Kentucky, reports (http://cjky.it/1RsU8YP) the finalized closure plans come after General Mills announced in February that it would close its refrigerated goods plant in New Albany by mid-2016. That closure is costing more than 400 workers their jobs.
The Sonoco plant was contracted to make the paper and metal cans for Pillsbury's dough products and deliver them by conveyor to the adjacent Pillsbury plant.
