New laws 2024: These new Indiana laws go into effect on July 1

According to the Indiana Senate Republicans, lawmakers passed 172 bills during this year’s legislative session.

INDIANA, USA — We’re nearly halfway through 2024 and dozens of new laws are about to go into effect in the Hoosier state.

According to the Indiana Senate Republicans, lawmakers passed 172 bills during this year’s legislative session. 

While some of those went into effect after being signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb, some won’t go into effect util later, however many will take effect at the start of next month.

Here’s a list of new Indiana bills that go into effect on July 1, 2024:

SEA 9 – Lowering health care costs in Indiana

The law improves transparency on market consolidation in Indiana’s health care system to help promote competition which drives down prices and prevents anti-competitive corporate mergers, officials said.

SEA 146 – Youth employment

Allows 18-year-olds to sell and serve alcohol in a dining room of a restaurant or hotel under certain conditions. Employers must also report how many minors they employ or face civil penalties.

SEA 190 – Supporting disaster victims

This law increases the maximum amount of money available from the Indiana State Disaster Relief Fund, I the event of a tornado or flooding. It also expands how the money can be used.

SEA 202 – Oversight of public colleges

This law requires any public university to report their diversity committees’ budget. It also allows students to report professors who don’t meet “free inquiry, free expression, and intellectual diversity” criteria.

HEA 1021 – New ‘Green Alert’ program

The new Green Alert Program is like amber and silver alerts but is used for missing at-risk Hoosier veterans.  

HEA 1086 – Happy hour in Indiana

Allows bars and restaurants to have happy hours and offer carryout cocktails.

HEA 1142 – Honoring first responders

Establishes a new “Hoosier First Responder medal of Honor” to recognize first responders who go above and beyond serving their community as well as those who have risked or lost their life in the line of duty.

HEA 1183 – Land protections

Blocks companies owned by foreign adversaries from buying land within 10 miles of a military base or any farmland in Indiana.
