LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After storms rolled through southern Indiana early Saturday, the Highlander Fire Department responded to a gas fire at a home.
Around 5:30 a.m., crews arrived at a home in the 3000 block of Fairway Drive following a natural gas leak.
Firefighters found a natural gas fire coming from the ground. Surveying crews also discovered the source of the leak and noticed the fire had spread to the house across the street.
The homeowner inside was notified and crews helped evacuate the home.
Investigators were able to determine the fire started in a basement ceiling where a natural gas line had ruptured and caught fire.
It’s unclear how the line ruptured, but it is believe that lightning from morning storms was a contributing factor.
The fire from the gas line was stopped around 8:30 a.m.
