Southern Indiana dam to be demolished

The 450-foot dam in Seymour originally provided surface water for a nearby treatment facility, but now, Indiana American Water said its obsolete.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Indiana American Water said on Tuesday it has secured the necessary permits to begin removing the Rockford dam on the east fork of the White River in Seymour, Indiana.

The 450-foot dam originally provided surface water for a nearby treatment facility, but now, Indiana American Water said its obsolete because the company only uses groundwater in Seymour.

Indiana American also said the removal will improve recreational safety, increase species biodiversity and restore the natural river ecosystem.

As a safety precaution, Indiana American has asked people to not boat or kayak near the dam as they take it down.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
