Starting salary for teachers in Greater Clark County Schools bumped up to $50,000

The average starting salary for a teacher in the U.S. this school year was $44,530.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Teachers in the Greater Clark County Schools district in southern Indiana will make at least $50,000 a year beginning with the 2024-25 school year.

The district announced Monday a $2,000 base salary increase for all teachers, which is in addition to the $2,500 increase that was already collectively bargained for next school year. This will increase starting pay in the district to $50,000 annually.

The top of the pay scale will move to $87,000.

"We recognize the invaluable contributions of our teachers and the pivotal role they play in shaping the future of our students," said district spokeswoman Renee’ Markoski in a news release. "By significantly increasing entry-level teacher pay, we are investing in the success of our educators and ensuring our students receive the highest quality of instruction. This increase will assist us in recruiting and retaining the best teachers, ultimately benefiting our entire school community."

According to the National Education Association, the average starting salary for a teacher in the United States this school year was $44,530. That was a 3.9% increase from the previous year.

Indiana law requires a minimum salary of $40,000 for teachers. A report published earlier this year showed the average teacher salary in the state was $58,531.

Gov. Eric Holcomb set a goal in his 2024 agenda of a $60,000 average.
