U.S. Census Bureau to build new facility in southern Indiana

Officials said the move is to consolidate all its operations into a single facility, designed for evolving operations.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The U.S. Census Bureau is set to build a new national processing center in Charlestown, Indiana.

The center is where all the mail, surveys and data the census collects is processed.

Their current facility sits on an 80-acre campus in Jeffersonville. Officials said the move is to consolidate all its operations into a single facility, designed for evolving operations.

The U.S. Census will transition to a 340,000-square-foot building at 1751 Penny Martin Lane in the River Ridge Commerce Center and will bring 600 employees.

“Charlestown proudly welcomes the U.S. Census Bureau as they transition from their current facility to a new, state-of-the-art home in the River Ridge Commerce Center,” Charlestown Mayor Treva Hodges said in a statement. “The regional retention of these 600 jobs demonstrates the appeal of our Southern Indiana communities, and we’re excited for Census employees to join the vibrant district of neighboring companies, including Cheesecake Factory, CTDI, and Dan Cristiani Excavating, Inc, that form the foundational pieces of Charlestown’s future.”

The move from Jeffersonville to Charlestown is expected to take place in summer 2026.
