Why Horseshoe Casino still paid workers when disaster closed the business

The Indiana casino was closed for 10 days and the hotel was out for 12.

INDIANA (LOUISVILLE BUSINESS FIRST) -- When the flooding started last month, no one at Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casino guessed the Ohio River would put them underwater for more than a week.

But as the waters rose higher, the inevitable became clear — the hotel and casino would have to close, and employees were going to be unable to come to work for a while. The casino was closed for 10 days and the hotel was out of commission for 12.

For many hourly employees, that many unpaid days off work would be devastating. Assistant General Manager Norris Hamilton and the other executives at Horseshoe all knew that, and they decided to do something about it.

"It wasn't our employees' fault" that the casino flooded," Hamilton said. "We made sure our employees were paid their base wages plus tips during that time."
