Woman, 2 cats escape early morning house fire in New Albany, officials say

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the house, despite another home being just 5 feet away.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — A woman and her two cats escaped a house fire in New Albany Thursday morning.

Firefighters responded to the call just after 5 a.m. in the 1100 block of Chartres Street. They arrived a few minutes later and found heavy fire coming from the home.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the house, despite another home being just 5 feet away. New Albany Fire Deputy Chief Tim Kron told WHAS11 the neighbor's house didn't get so much as a scorch.

The woman and her cats were able to safely evacuate before the fire department arrived. The home's owner told WHAS11 that the woman was a friend of his, and that he was getting the home ready for sale.

Firefighters don't have an official cause yet, but they don't suspect anything suspicious.
