MADISON, Indiana — Indiana State Police (ISP) are investigating after a woman died while incarcerated at a southern Indiana jail early Friday morning.

Authorities said 44-year-old Misty Williams was booked into the Jefferson County Jail by the Hanover Police Department around 9 p.m. Thursday evening.

Williams was later found unresponsive in the jail around 6 a.m. Friday. ISP said jail staff attempted to provide life-saving medical treatment to Williams, but when EMS arrived, she was pronounced dead.

A forensic autopsy is scheduled to be performed in Hamilton County, Ohio to determine her cause of death, however foul play is not suspected.

According to ISP, Williams was booked into the jail on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hypodermic syringe and maintaining a common nuisance.
