'They know they're going to be supported': JCPS approves 6-week paid parental leave

Starting July 1, all district employees will be eligible for the six weeks of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In an effort to attract more teachers, the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Board of Education added a new benefit for teachers and staff on Tuesday: paid parental leave.

Starting July 1, all district employees will be eligible for the six weeks of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

They passed the proposal during a meeting on Tuesday.

Superintendent Marty Pollio said it's an important step in attracting people to come work for the district.

"I think we're really going to have to focus on benefits, you know obviously salary but also benefits and supports for people to come into the profession, that they know they're going to be supported," he said. "I think it's just something that is going to be in every district within the next five years, so I clearly think we should be on the front end of that."

JCPS joined other districts, like Oldham County, to approve paid leave for its employees.
