Republican lawmaker responds after Gov. Beshear vetoes bill that could possibly split JCPS

The governor said those who reside in Jefferson County should be able to make decisions about the public schools and not legislators who don’t live in the county.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear has vetoed a resolution that creates a task force to look into Jefferson County Public Schools.

Beshear called the measure “unconstitutional” on Monday.

The governor said those who reside in Jefferson County should be able to make decisions about the public schools and not legislators who don’t live in the county.

The resolution called for a review of JCPS’ performance and look at the possibility of splitting up the district.

Republican Representative Ken Fleming, who is one of two lawmakers backing the resolution, said he wasn’t surprised at the veto.

“While I wholeheartedly disagree with the Governor’s choice to veto HCR 81, I am not surprised. He has consistently chosen to ignore the district’s failure to meet the needs of our community’s children, even though audit after audit reveals issues within the district and both the state and federal government have issued corrective plans over the past decade,” Fleming said.

Fleming went on to say that his priorities are the students, families and the staff.

The legislative session will reconvene at the end of the week and will have an opportunity to override Gov. Beshear’s veto.
