JEFFERSONVILLE, Indiana — Residents in downtown Jeffersonville will soon be able to drink alcohol in select outdoor spaces now that the city has been approved as a designated outdoor refreshment area (DORA).
The Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission approved Jeffersonville's application, and Jeffersonville City Council has already approved the DORA ordinance.
"It's an exciting opportunity for downtown Jeffersonville," Mayor Mike Moore said.
He believes the new designation will promote community engagement, boost economic activity and provide residents with a dynamic outdoor social space.
Downtown retailers within a certain location will be able to apply for a DORA permit, but state law only allows the city to establish up to seven DORAs. Residential properties can't apply and at each street entry/exit from the DORA, the sidewalk will be painted with a logo making it clear someone is entering or exiting the refreshment area.
Participating locations will have a sign in their establishment and use designated DORA cups, which are only for use in the designated area, to show they are an approved DORA location.
Moore said numerous downtown restaurants and retailers have already expressed interest in the new program.
“Especially as the temperatures increase, I can see downtown businesses working together to promote the area and coordinating events," he added. "Other cities have seen a substantial increase in foot traffic and customer spending after allowing similar permits.”
DORA boundaries can not be within 200 feet of a church or school, unless there is at least 85 feet and a two-lane road at least 30 feet in width between the boundary and church or school.
To be considered, businesses must submit an application with the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.
