Off-duty firefighter honored by Mayor Greenberg after jumping into action during fire in Old Louisville

Juan Pablo Saavedra is being thanked for his bravery after jumping into action following the deadly, fiery crash on 2nd and Oak on June 7.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A firefighter has been honored for his heroic efforts during a recent fiery crash in Old Louisville.

On June 7, firefighter Juan Pablo Saavedra was on his way home when he saw a car engulfed in flames near a building on South 2nd and Oak Street.

Saavedra stopped, called 911 and alerted the nearest firehouse.

He couldn’t get to the car because of the small explosions along with the smoke and flames, but he was able to enter a restaurant housed in the building and made sure everyone got out safely.

Mayor Craig Greenberg’s office said Saavedra also checked out other businesses and apartments after the fire spread to ensure everyone else was safe.

Saavedra remained and helped at the scene until the fire was cleared.

He was awarded with a special proclamation by Greenberg to recognize him for his heroic efforts.
