KDE's Lewis says "no agenda" on JCPS student assignment plan, demands action

JCPS is reviewing a settlement proposal from Interim Commissioner Lewis in wake of a possible state takeover of the district.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Kentucky Department of Education interim commission said he has "no agenda or idea" concerning the issue of student assignment in Jefferson County Public Schools.

"What the imperative is for me with student assignment is that something change because it is really clear from the findings of our audit that the current student assignment has led to greater inequity in the system," Interim Commissioner Wayne Lewis said.

JCPS is reviewing a settlement proposal from Lewis in wake of a possible state takeover of the district. The settlement would give the state oversight over the district's student assignment plan, something several parents and JCPS officials said would not be agreeable.

"What is the non-negotiable for me is that the district and the board do something, not that they do anything in particular," Lewis said.

Lewis said he does welcome discussion from JCPS about the settlement proposal before a decision is to be made next week. JCPS was originally given a deadline of August 1 to respond to the proposal.

"I know some folks have characterized this as an extension," Lewis said. "I've never characterized that way. It is more just I am always open to hearing what JCPS has to say to us."
