Runners who participated in first-ever Derby Festival miniMarathon reunite

They brought old photos and souvenirs from the original race and shared their running stories from all those years ago.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It's been 50 years since the first Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon.

On Friday, dozens of the original 301 runners who participated in the 1974 miniMarathon got back together for a luncheon.

They brought old photos and souvenirs from the original race and shared their running stories from all those years ago.

Roz Schneider was one of those runners who participated in KDF's first-ever race.

"It was very exciting, I loved the people cheering you on," Schneider said. "I made a mistake in my training. Normally, I ran four miles a day but before the marathon -- the day before -- I ran 12 miles which I know was not smart, but I did it and I made it out, so."

Event organizers said the luncheon was an opportunity to thank the runners for starting the running tradition here in Louisville that has now spanned more than half a century.
