Oldham County family honors woman killed in hit-and-run crash

Margaret Preble, 75, was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Nov. 11. Although two people were arrested in her death, her husband said it's "no relief."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An Oldham County family is grieving after a hit-and-run crash killed 75-year-old Margaret Preble.

There have been two arrests in the case, but Margaret's husband Larry Preble said it doesn't give him any relief from the pain of losing a loved one.

"It's a big piece of me that's missing," Larry said.

Larry gathered Sunday with friends and family for a celebration of life for his late wife, known as Peggy by her loved ones.

Attendees took to an open mic to remember Margaret's legacy.

She was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Nov. 11.

"It is a really wonderful surprise to see all these people who came to give her a send off at exactly the kind of party that she would have loved to have gone to herself," Larry said.

Oldham County police said Margaret was found unresponsive laying in the grass near the roadway on US-42 between KY-53 and Smith Lane. Police said the driver fled the scene, and investigators said he tried to conceal evidence.

"It was bad of them for trying to hide their crime and drive off 160 miles away. It's difficult for me to think about it," Larry said.

53-year-old Jason Cornett and 23-year-old Zoe Wolfe were arrested and charged in the incident.

Police said Cornett drove his damaged truck out of the county to an auto repair shop in Corbin.

According to court documents, police found evidence indicating Cornett was driving the truck at the time of the fatal crash and had consumed several alcoholic beverages before getting behind the wheel.

Cornett is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render aid and tampering with physical evidence. Wolfe is charged with tampering with physical evidence.

Both Cornett and Wolfe are expected back in court Dec. 9.

Despite the arrests, Larry said it's no ease for his pain.

"No relief, really. I'm glad that perhaps justice will be served," he said. "That's good, but all I can think of is her."

Larry was surrounded by about 200 attendees; family, friends, and people they know from a cycling group, plus a pickleball group and the senior community.

"They've helped me get through it," Larry said. "My friends are helping me eat. I've lost six pounds in a couple of weeks because of stress and no sleep. Because I have these wonderful people around me, I will make it through."

The video was a reflection on Margaret's impact through the years.

"It was a labor of love going through hundreds of hours of video spanning 41 years," Larry said. "Cutting and snipping them together to come up with one final remembrance."
