Kentucky fire departments battle apartment fire Bullitt County

Firefighters believe the fire started on the first floor of the stairwell in the middle of the complex.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Several fire departments within Kentucky battled an apartment fire in Bullitt County late Thursday night.

The apartment complex is on Landmark Court in Shepherdsville.

Firefighters believe the fire started on the first floor of the stairwell in the middle of the complex.

About 25 people lived within the complex, and the Shepardsville Fire Chief Jody Craig said five people went to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

"All our residents are accounted for; we transported five people who went to the UVA hospital with smoke inhalation, I think one of them had an ankle injury," Craig said.

The WHAS11 News crew on scene watched as firefighters threw out debris, including a burnt mattress, out of the second story windows of the complex.

The American Red Cross is helping house those displaced by the fire for the night.
