Kentucky State Fair proposal submitted to Gov. Beshear

The proposal features changes like wider aisles, enforcing masks and gloves for staff and no spectators for certain shows.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky State Fair Board has submitted a draft proposal to Gov. Andy Beshear to hold a modified state fair in August.

The coronavirus has left a mark on the fairgrounds this year, like it has many other businesses. The grounds lost nearly $2.3 million in revenue this March, and a fair would be a major help in making up for the dozens of concert and events already canceled in 2020.

During a virtual board meeting, the board discussed having wider aisles that could be one-way, adding hand-washing or sanitizer stations and enforcing masks and gloves for all staff. The fair has been scheduled for August 20-30.

The board is pushing to reduce occupancy in some areas by 80%. There would be no spectators for the World's Championship Horse Show. They are also limiting the occupancy for livestock shows.

Under the proposal, the fair would have reduced hours as well. The fair would start at 2 p.m. and food vendors will open at noon. Social distancing will be required for lines or outdoor concerts. Rides will be frequently sanitized.

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles, a member of the fair board, said the proposal will respect public health guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"I am optimistic the Fair Board will be able to enter into a meaningful back and forth...as soon as possible," Quarles said. "I believe that if Kentucky can pull off a modified Derby, we can pull off a modified State Fair."

The proposals are fluid, and could be adjusted during discussions with Beshear's office. Organizers made it clear things will depend on the social distancing guidelines in place during the time of the event.

In Indiana, the fair board is moving forward with plans to host the fair August 7-23. Larger mass gatherings similar to the fair would be allowed under Gov. Eric Holcomb's plans after July 4.

The Ohio and Wisconsin State Fairs are just some of the fairs that have been canceled this year.
