Kentucky to shut down motor vehicles database for at least two weeks

The shut down will happen in January to install the new system.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — City officials are alerting drivers across Jefferson County about an upcoming planned shutdown of the current system.

The shutdown means that county clerk offices across Kentucky cannot issue decals, plates, disabled parking permits, and registrations, nor process vehicle transfers, until at least mid-January. The shutdown will last at least two weeks until mid-January.

Efforts to replace the current system started in 2001, but several setbacks have delayed the update.

Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Holsclaw said the state will waive any late fees and penalties while the system is offline.

"However, I encourage everyone who has motor vehicle title work or registration renewals to process to do so now and not wait until January," she said.

However Erran Huber, the director of communications at the County Clerk's Office, clarified that those who are due to renew their registrations in January or have other related business due then will need to do so in 2024. But those who have stuff to be done this year are encouraged to not delay "to avoid any additional backlog."

Other services not reliant on the system, like Legal Records and Professional License departments, will remain open officials said.
