Kentucky's state auditor looking into Louisville's MSD

Metro Councilman Scott Reed and State Rep. Jared Bauman addressed this formal audit request for MSD inside Metro Hall.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky's state auditor announced on Thursday they are looking into Louisville's Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD).

Metro Councilman Scott Reed and State Rep. Jared Bauman addressed this formal audit request for MSD inside Metro Hall.

Reed said it follows noticeable sewer rate hikes seven of the last 10 years, as well as salary raises for MSD executives.

"What we want here is accountability," Reed said. "It may be completely justified, I don't know. What I do know is that rate increases have gone up seven of the last 10 years, 6.9%. You got the cost of electricity, got the cost of groceries. You got the cost of fuel, everything has gone up. So our constituents in the area are asking why. So that's what we're trying to find out."

In a statement to WHAS11 News, MSD said in part:

"Our rates are driven by the billions of dollars in system enhancements required by the federal government...while we never want to increase rates, measured increases over time are required in order to continue to protect the health and safety of our communities."

The audit is expected to last through 2025.
