LOUISVILLE, Ky. — West Louisville will have more access to health care as Kentucky State University is set to bring a mobile health care unit to the area.

The mobile health unit will make a stop at Family Health Centers on Portland Avenue on Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m.

The nature of the units are to provide easy access to communities that are unable to visit hospitals or clinics.

KSU said these units are equipped to diagnose and treat metabolic syndrome which are conditions like hypertension, high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels – conditions that could increase heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

The mobile health unit will not only provide clinical care, but nutrition education.

KSU’s Nutrition Education Program focuses their approach on using “food as medicine” and will use interactive experiences to promote healthy food choices and physical activity in underserved communities.

“Etched on one of Kentucky State University’s buildings is, ‘Enter to learn, Go out to serve,’ this initiative reflects our commitment to expanding our impact far beyond the classroom,” KSU President Dr. Koffi Akakpo said.

Locations were chosen based on research by the university.

KSU is collaborating with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, the Kentucky Department for Public Health, Family Health Centers, Inc., Park DuValle Community Health Center and Jefferson Community and Technical College to bring accessible health care to neighborhoods across west Louisville.
