LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For months, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has been trying to capture copper wire thieves.
The thieves are breaking into lighting systems and junction boxes to steal the wires, which they sell as scrap metal.
The KYTC is partnering with LMPD in hopes of putting an end to it.
Officials say most of the thefts are happening along the interstates, and costing taxpayers an estimated $750,000 in damages to systems paid for with tax dollars.
KYTC’s District 5, which includes Jefferson County, said in February about 94,000 feet of copper wire had been taken from light poles and junction boxes.
If you have any information that can help lead to arrests, you are asked to call the Anonymous Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673) or use LMPD’s online Crime Tip Portal.
There is a $5,000 reward for information.
