LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Thousands of Kosair Kids and their families trick-or-treated around the Louisville Zoo on Wednesday night during a huge Halloween Party.

Kids of all abilities collected candy from several booths throughout the zoo during the 18th annual Kosair for Kids Halloween Party during Boo at the Zoo.

During every October since 2005, Kosair Kids have dressed in their favorite costumes and toured the zoo, checking out animals while trick-or-treating.

Many families appreciate the opportunity for their children to be able to "just be a kid" in a friendly environment that caters to their specific needs.

The Kosair for Kids Halloween Party is a tradition for those like the Ferguson family whose son lives with epilepsy.

“I always appreciate being around other families that have children that have different disorders like epilepsy,” Sonya Ferguson said. “It’s just very welcoming, I feel like it’s a huge community, and it means a lot for my family and my son, obviously, to be around other kids like him.”

Barry Dunn, whose son lives with Cerebral Palsy, serves as the president of Kosair for Kids and celebrated the night with all of the other families.

“The Kosair Kids night at the zoo is always a special night because the community mobilizes behind it,” Dunn said. “We have volunteers from places around the city come and pass out candy to our Kids. We have families who have received our financial assistance and come and have a special night here. We have organizations that bring kids that we’ve been able to help and partner with throughout the year. So, it’s really that team effort, that comradery that’s developed over time that shines bright on a night like this when we are able to bring so many folks together all to put a smile on kids' faces and make sure they are feeling the love, joy, and care that we like to provide.”
