Kroger responds to food safety concerns at Louisville supermarket

“Pay attention when you’re shopping at the grocery store."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A major food retailer in Kentuckiana is responding to claims that food at one of its Louisville stores was relabeled and nearly sold past its original sell by date.

Photos posted to social media appear to show a roasted chicken for sale at Kroger's Clifton location, located on Brownsboro Road, with a sticker that has a sell by date of Dec. 3. However, another photo shows a second label, hidden under the first, but with a sell by date of Nov. 27.

The woman who made the post, and wished to remain anonymous, told WHAS11 she took the photos Thursday night while looking for a quick dinner for her family.

“Pay attention when you’re shopping at the grocery store,” she warned customers.

WHAS11 crews visited the Kroger location on Friday to verify the authenticity of the photos, but when we arrived, all the roasted chickens had been removed from the sales floor.

A Kroger spokesperson said the company is investigating the incident further and retraining staff on proper food safety protocols.

“We take this isolated incident very seriously as food safety is a top priority,” they said. “We understand the concerns that this incident may have raised among our customers, and we would like to reassure everyone that we are taking all necessary steps to address the issue and prevent any recurrence.”
