People heading onto the Ohio River have been warned; don't touch the water.

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- If you're planning a trip on the Ohio River, you may want to avoid touching the water.

The Kentucky Division of Water and the Department for Public Health is warning people about dangerous amounts of algae in the Ohio River. The advisory extends from the West Virginia state line to the dam in Hancock County.

This directive only applies to touching the water directly. Drinking treated water is safe, even if it once contained in the algae.

While most of our weekend looks primed for outdoor activity, you may want to be careful if your plans include enjoying the Ohio River.
