LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A piece of history came tumbling down in southwest Louisville on Saturday.

Officials with LG&E brought down the last standing portions of the retired coal-fired Cane Run Road Generating Station.

That plant produced its last megawatt of power nearly four years ago after 61 years of use.

Construction of that facility dates back to the 1950s to meet the city’s power demands. Officials say during the peak of operations, the state-of-the art facility generated nearly 1,000 megawatts and employed about 500 people.

The Cane Run site was also known for installing some of the nation’s first sulfur-dioxide removal systems which gained national attention and a visit from former President Jimmy Carter.

LG&E officials say the site will become a grassy field.
