'Multi-day restoration event': LG&E official gives update on power outages in Kentucky

More than 120,000 LG&E and KU customers were affected by the storms on Sunday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Hours after storms swept through many Kentucky communities Sunday, tens of thousands of people are waking up without power.

Monday morning, LG&E spokesperson Liz Pratt said the energy company is considering this a "multi-day restoration event," and gave an update on the energy company's efforts to restore power to customers.

"Since yesterday morning around 9 a.m., this storm that swept through Kentucky affected more than 120,000 LG&E and KU customers," Pratt said.

As of 9 a.m., the LG&E Power Outage Map online showed over 81,000 customers in Kentucky remain without power. The majority of customers without power are in Jefferson County. Approximately 39,000 customers in Jefferson County don't have power.

As the day went on, more than 39,000 customers were reported without power, with about 19,000 of those customers in Jefferson County as of 5 a.m. Tuesday.

In response to the widespread outage, hundreds of workers are coming from Kentucky and neighboring states to the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville to assist LG&E in restoring power to customers.

"In addition to our hundreds of employees and business partners who are already working in the field and behind the scenes, we're bringing in an additional 700 line workers and support personnel from business partners," Pratt said.

LG&E officials say while they are working to restore power to all affected customers, crews are being expedited to focus on "critical customers," such as hospitals and emergency responding facilities.

"We appreciate our customers patience, and we will be working safely and as quickly as possible to get power restored," Pratt said.

So far, LG&E officials say crews have responded to more than 1,000 reports of downed wires in The Commonwealth. If you see a downed wire, you should assume it is an energized powerline, stay away, and report it to LG&E immediately.
