LOUISVILLE, Ky. — LG&E is another step closer to building a new natural gas unit at its Mill Creek Generating Station off Dixie Highway.
In a public hearing on Thursday, the company hosted a community meeting to show the benefits of building the new plant.
In November, LG&E and KU closed two coal-fired plants in southwest Jefferson County.
Because of this closure and switch to natural gas, the company said this will effectively reduce their carbon footprint.
"I think a lot of the commenters are concerned that although this reduces a lot of traditional air pollution, it's still a fossil fuel fire generating unit," Matt King with the Air Pollution Control District said. "We will review those comments, work with a team of permit writers and other engineers to consider those comments, and see how they may adjust the permit. And then we will write up a written response to comments."
The Kentucky Public Service has already given LG&E the go ahead to build the plant.
The commission at that time also approved more than 1,000 megawatts of solar energy and battery storage for the company.
