Lightning strike catches Fairfield church on fire during Thursday storms

A Baptist church in Fairfield caught fire Thursday during a string of storms that hit Kentuckiana

FAIRFIELD, Ky. —

A church caught fire in Fairfield, Kentucky, Thursday following a string of thunderstorms that brought strong winds and heavy rain to the Kentuckiana area.

Firefighters believe the cause of the fire was a lightning strike that hit the steeple of Second Baptist Church during the storms.

Authorities reported that about 20 firefighters worked for over two hours to put out the fire, which was contained to the building's steeple and foyer area. Firefighters responded from the Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District and Nelson County Fire and Rescue Department.

"Thank you for spending your holiday protecting our communities," Facebook user Marie Hynes commented on the Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District's page.

Second Baptist will be unable to hold services inside the building for the foreseeable future, according to the church’s Facebook page.

"While there is significant interior and exterior damage caused by the fire to the front section of the church building, we will continue to trust and praise God as we go through the repair process,” the Rev. Dr. Calvin Holloway said
