'Lights Out Louisville' | Initiative aims to prevent bird deaths by turning off the lights at night in downtown Louisville

Across the county, hundreds of millions of birds die due to collisions with skyscrapers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Turning off the lights of Louisville's skyline is part of an effort to save the lives of birds flying through the city.

Across the county, hundreds of millions of birds die due to collisions with skyscrapers.

And buildings that leave their lights on overnight, when most birds migrate, are more likely to attract collisions.

On Thursday, advocates gathered to launch Lights Out Louisville.

"Even if you don't care about birds, you probably care about your electric bill," one advocate said. "And we know that in Kentucky, between February 2023, and February 2024, electricity costs for residents went up about 8% so there is an obvious cost savings."

Several cities across the country are part of the Lights Our campaign, including Chicago, Houston, Dallas, New York City and Atlanta.
