LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It's an age old question now: What do you do with your old cell phone once you've upgraded?

Well, Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) has a possible solution for you.

In a post on their social media, the police department said their Victim Services Unit will be hosting an event called "Phone It Forward" on Aug. 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during their 2024 National Night Out.

During this event, officers will team up with the  911 Cell Phone Bank to collect old smart phones for victims of human trafficking, domestic violence and violent crime. Other items they will accept include tablets, laptops, smartwatches and iPads.

The 911 Cell Phone Bank has helped more than 200,000 victims since 2004 according to its website.

Officials said the devices will be restored to their factory settings; if that's not possible, they will get recycled through a licensed R2 recycler.
