Operation H.E.A.T. aims to tackle vehicle thefts in Louisville

Operation H.E.A.T., or Help Eliminate Car Theft, aims to provide drivers the tools needed to prevent them from becoming a target.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) launched a new initiative on Thursday to hopefully prevent more car thefts in the metro.

Operation H.E.A.T., or Help Eliminate Car Theft, aims to provide drivers the tools needed to prevent them from becoming a target.

LMPD said Shirley's Way donated money so they could purchase around 1800 steering wheel locks for public distribution in each of its eight divisions.

Historically, specific Hyundai and KIA vehicles have been disproportionally affected by auto thefts and criminals continue to exploit the vehicles' design deficiencies.

"We want the [community] to understand these vehicles are contributing to other crimes, they aren't just stealing these vehicles for joy rides, they are using these vehicles to commit shootings, robberies of individuals, burglaries; it's directly related to violent crime," Maj. Donald Boeckman said.

LMPD said they've seen 770 vehicles stolen just in 2024 alone.

"They're telling us I've had my car broken into, I had a family member carjacked," Sgt. Tony Sacra with the Community Engagement Unit said. "And we are going to make a difference in the community."

LMPD's goal is to give away 200 locks through each of its eight divisions.
