LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A woman and child are hospitalized after being hit by a car on Dixie Highway Friday night.

Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) Third Division officers responded to a call of a pedestrian hit on Dixie Highway near Katheine Station Road around 10:30 p.m.

Police said their preliminary investigation reveals that a passenger vehicle stopped in the southbound lanes of Dixie Highway. The woman driving got out of the vehicle, for reasons unknown, and was hit by a passenger vehicle also driving southbound.

That impact caused the woman to end up in the northbound lanes of Dixie Highway, LMPD said. The vehicle impacted the woman's car, causing serious damage and injuring a child passenger inside.

The vehicle that hit the victims stopped and remained on scene, authorities said.

EMS took the woman to UofL Hospital with injuries that are life-threatening, and the child to Norton Children’s Hospital with "serious injuries." The second driver had no reported injuries.

LMPD’s Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.
