LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A dog once on the brink of death is now recovering at a local veterinary clinic. His owner hopes his story will help raise awareness about a common and deadly fungus.

Chip the Greyhound was diagnosed with a fungus called blastomycosis in June. He's now receiving treatment at Blue Pearl Veterinary Center in Middletown.

The fungus is typically found in rotted wood or damp soil. There's very little pet parents can do to avoid the fungus. Blastomycosis is difficult to treat because of the expensive medication, but Chip's owners said they were committed to doing whatever was necessary to help their pup.

“Chip is very, very sweet. He loves everybody. He loves to cuddle and to snuggle and be petted. He plays a little, but he's not really rambunctious. He's a lover, not a fighter,” Toni Perkins, Chip’s owner, said.

Veterinarians said the best thing to do is become educated on the disease and seek treatment as soon as possible if your dog begins exhibiting symptoms such as coughing, lack of appetite and fever.
