Louisville's airport is expanding security area. Here's what we know

The airport said while it will appear the lines are longer than normal, the same number of passengers will be screened during construction.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Travelers, the inside of Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is going to look a bit different for a while.

According to a news release, phase one of the of their new construction project is underway. The end goal is to have 10 lanes total for their security checkpoints and implement new screening technology.

For now, the queuing lanes for both TSA PreCheck and General Screening will be relocated where both the Brooks Brothers and Kentucky Bourbon Trail stores used to be.

Both will be reduced to a single-file line and wrap behind the American, United, Allegiant, and Spirit ticket counters.

The airport said while it will appear the lines are longer than normal, the same number of passengers will be screened during construction.

Both the Churchill Downs and Louisville Slugger stores will also be remodeled according to the release.

Phase one is expected to be completed in April well before the 150th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby the airport added.

Final designs are expected "in the coming months" and that work is expected to start later this year.

This expansion is part of a $400 million enhancement project.
