Louisville chosen for innovative design project to make cities safer for women

Metro Government's Office for Women is working with London-based research group Publica to prioritize gender equity in design.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville is one of three cities chosen to participate in a program on how to design cities, so they are safe for women and girls.

Metro Government's Office for Women is working with London-based research group Publica to prioritize gender equity in design.

The program focuses on safety in public spaces. It works from three lenses of safety – freedom from violence, usability and sense of belonging.

“You don’t need to be a woman or girl to be excited about this project when we make streets safer for a woman pushing a stroller, we make it safer for everyone and make it a street people want to go and shop and got to a restaurant our goals are focused on women and girls, but they benefit the whole community,” Gretchen Hunt, the office’s director, said.

Publica will conduct education training sessions for built environment professionals, including planners, engineers, developers, architects, policy makers, public artists and others. They will conduct safety walks in two neighborhoods and host a workshop for teen girls to explore their role in shaping public spaces.

Louisville is the second U.S. city to get picked for the program besides Los Angeles.

The international organization said it was impressed with the mayor’s Office of Women.
