LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Editor's note: The above video is from June 2023.

Louisville Free Public Library leaders said they have taken several steps to address safety concerns at the city's library branches.

The WHAS11 FOCUS team has reported on different incidents including fights between teenagers and other teens refusing to leave.

During a budget hearing before Metro Council on Monday, Director Lee Burchfield said they've installed security cameras at seven different locations.

They have also switched security firms and started using off-duty police officers at branches with concerns.

"We've utilized this a couple times over the last couple months, where we just brought an officer in and they were just in their car in the parking lot, and have found it to be very reassuring to the staff and very calming to the immediate neighborhood around the branch," Burchfield said.

He said they have asked for money in their budget for security.

They want to use capital funds to install security cameras at every branch.

Metro Council will vote on the budget on June 20.
