2 courtrooms damaged after flooding at Louisville's Hall of Justice

A court official said the flooding was a "temporary, but considerable inconvenience" and will take weeks of clean up.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It will take weeks before two courtrooms at Louisville's Hall of Justice are able to be used again after an accident caused flooding earlier this week.

A Jefferson County Court Administrator said a work aid inmate from the Metro Department of Corrections accidentally broke a sprinkler head while moving a box in the building's laundry room on Tuesday.

They said the laundry room sits right above the courtrooms, so the damaged sprinkler system caused "extensive water damage" to two district courtrooms and a file room in the Circuit Court Clerk's office.

"We shifted everyone to different courtrooms, but because there was standing water in the holdover cells and the elevators, we couldn't get in-custody defendants over for court in the morning," the official said.

The sprinkler system has since been repaired, however it will take another four to six weeks before the damaged courtrooms can be used again as crews still clean up the mess and make repairs.

"It was a temporary but considerable inconvenience," the official told WHAS11.
