Nearly 2,400 runners participate in Louisville's Hungry Turkey 5K

Kelly Kaiser and her husband drove down from Chicago to support their hometown and the WHAS Crusade for Children.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It was a perfect Thanksgiving morning for the eighth annual Louisville Hungry Turkey 5K.

Runners and walkers of all ages gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the holiday and also help the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Nearly 2,400 crowded Waterfront Park's Great Lawn for the 5K.

This was the second year the Hungry Turkey has partnered with the Crusade for Children. Participants could either donate online when registering or on-site. Proceeds from the race go to benefit children with special needs across Kentucky and Indiana.

The race traveled down River Road and made its way back through Waterfront Park back to the finish line at the Great Lawn.

The event has become a tradition for many families with people coming from all over the country.

Kelly Kaiser and her husband drove down from Chicago to support their hometown.

"We love to do anything that supports the community and we're from Louisville," Kaiser said. "We love coming back and so we all come out for the Crusade for Children and the Turkey Trot. Just a nice family tradition we started a long time ago and we can't convince everyone to run, but we round up as many of us as we can and just come out here and have a good time."

The overall winner of this year's race was Noah Cummisford, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, although his parents now live here in Louisville.
