LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man was taken to the hospital after he crashed into a dumpster abandoned by a Waste Management truck driver on I-265 south Wednesday.
Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) responded to a report of an accident on I-265 north, near Stonetstreet Road.
According to an arrest citation, several calls for service were made stating the crash involved a dumpster truck that was hit by a vehicle, with some reports saying the dumpster was still in the road.
Upon arrival, police said they saw a "very large amount" if debris covering the road and a dumpster that received "heavy damage."
The citation shows the victim said he hit the dumpster head-on and couldn't avoid it. A witness told police they saw the garbage truck pull over to the side of the road for a few minutes and then leave.
The victim was taken to the hospital. His current condition is unknown.
Court documents say the driver, 33-year-old Howard Wright, and Waste Management didn't contact authorities that there was a 1,600-pound commercial grade dumpster abandoned on the highway.
Waste Management was notified that their truck and driver needed to return to the scene.
Wright told police he panicked after he picked up the dumpster from a FiveStar Food Market and the dumpster got stuck in the "up" position.
Further investigation found the dumpster hit a bridge on the Gene Snyder causing the dumpster to detach from the truck.
Wright was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid or assistance.
