LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville high school student has been arrested after a gun was found inside their backpack Wednesday morning.
Louisville Male High School Principal Keith Cathey said the firearm was detected by the school's weapon detection system.
"All of our students, staff, and visitors walk through these systems every day as part of our safety plan," Cathey said in a letter sent to parents.
The principal said the student was arrested and will be charged. They will also be disciplined in accordance with the school's student handbook.
Last year, Jefferson County Public Schools' (JCPS) Board of Education approved a plan to install weapons detection systems in several schools within the district.
The units -- designed by Evolv Technology -- are used to detect concealed weapons, like guns and knives, that students may have as they walk into school every morning.
JCPS Superintendent Marty Pollio previously said the estimated cost for a five-year leasing option -- which includes the equipment, software and one-time installation -- is around $17 million.
