Crushing cars? Louisville mayor looking into more street racing legislation as LMPD confiscates 5 vehicles

"I strongly support legislation that when we seize vehicles that are partaking in this extremely dangerous behavior, those cars get crushed.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Metro Police said five vehicles were confiscated as more street takeovers happened Monday night.

In a Tuesday Facebook post, police said three of the vehicles were involved in takeover incidents that happened during the Labor Day weekend. A work truck appeared to be among those snatched up.

LMPD is seizing vehicles under a city ordinance and Mayor Craig Greenberg said he is looking at ways to strengthen laws surrounding streetcar racing.

“When it comes to legislation, yes, I have been in conversations with both Metro Council – who is very focused on this issue, as well as with the state,” he said. “One innovative approach that some other states are taking are not only are they confiscating cars, but when they confiscate cars, they crush them. I strongly support legislation that when we seize vehicles that are partaking in this extremely dangerous behavior, those cars get crushed.”

LMPD said the five vehicles will sit in their impound lot until March 2025 and will be slapped with a $1,000 fine for the first offense.

So far, the department said they have towed or cited 25 cars for participating or blocking traffic this month.
