LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville McDonald's is hosting a fundraiser for a traffic guard who was severely injured on the job.
Gertrude Schaftlein, who served 48 years as a traffic guard for Louisville Metro Police (LMPD), was hit by a semi-truck on Sept. 6 while working near Wellington Elementary.
Authorities said she suffered severe injuries from the hit-and-run accident, which caused her to have a leg amputated.
To support her recovery, the McDonald’s located at 10411 Dixie Hwy. will be hosting a digital fundraiser on Nov. 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Accoridng to a news release, 50% of all mobile app purchases will go to the LMPD Foundation to support Schaftlein.
If you would like to participate in the fundraising efforts, you need to download the McDonald’s app, place your order with the McDonald’s located at 10411 Dixie Hwy., and pay in the app. Drop-off donations made payable to the LMPD Foundation will be accepted through the drive-through and inside.
In addition to the fundraiser, a short ceremony honoring Schaftlein will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on Nov. 9.
“This neighborhood is a very tight-knit community,” Matthew Dodd, owner/operator of McDonald’s located on Dixie Highway, said. “This is a way for the community to come together and help support the long-term care needs that Officer Schaftlein is facing.”
