Louisville Metro Housing Authority helps 500th family close on a new home

The program helps transition low-income families from renting to owning their own house.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Housing Authority marked a major milestone on Wednesday.

The agency helped new homeowners close on their 500th house.

Their program works to get low-income families into their own house and making the move from renting.

Homeowners can use their HUD-approved voucher toward mortgage payments.

So far there are more than 400 families in the program. Each one received homeownership counseling before moving in.

Merideth told WHAS11 News she just closed on her home after getting put on the right path with this program.

"My road to home ownership was def a hard one, I was homeless for six months," Merideth said. I battled with addiction and realized I was pregnant during that time, so I really needed to make a change.

The housing authority has 19 additional contracts ready to close in the coming months.
