2 Louisville DMVs to close for two weeks due to backlog of work caused by KAVIS issues

The two-week closures start next week.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Jefferson County Clerk's Office will temporarily close two motor vehicle branches for two week later this month.

Starting July 8 through July 19, the West Branch (228 Amy Avenue) and Downtown Branch (200 S. Fifth St.) will be closed to the public so staff at those locations can help process the "significant backlog of dealer work."

Officials said the backlog is due to an update to Kentucky's Automated Vehicle Information System (KAVIS) earlier this year.

The update's rocky rollout caused significant delays across Jefferson County DMV locations.

Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Holsclaw said there are numerous vehicle buyers still awaiting registration and license plates due to title delays caused by the KAVIS glitches.

"It was not a decision made lightly, but we feel this is the best way to handle the KAVIS catastrophe," Holsclaw said in a statement. "Our customers are used to a 24-48 hour turnaround on work, but now we're seeing dealerships wait up to a month because there are so many problems with KAVIS."

According to a news release, customers are asked to use online, phone, or ail-in options for registration renewal or visit other branches. Sheriff's Auto Inspections and property tax drop-off services will also not be available at the West Branch location during its closure.

Holsclaw said after the two-week closure, the Downtown branch will operate with limited hours, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Clerks will then spend the remainder of their day processing additional dealer work.
