LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On hot days this past summer, they sat empty with no people, no water.
The Algonquin pool did not open this summer, and the Camp Taylor Metro pool has been closed since 2019.
Both pools were built in the 1960's and will be closed again for the summer of 2024.
"Be patient, the renderings are beautiful, everything that I asked for is going to be part of it," Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins of Dist. 1 said.
Hawkins has faith and is urging patience. The renovations of the pools are going to be major.
In August, public meetings were held for input about $9 million worth of investments in Algonquin and the Camp Taylor pool.
Hawkins said the outcome of the renderings are worth the wait.
"Everything that the community wanted to see in that pool actually was put in the renderings alongside a space for programming," she said.
In a statement, Katy Huffman, spokesperson for Louisville Parks and Recreation, said they "are finalizing design concepts based on the feedback we've received from those stakeholders," and they hope to reveal the concepts soon.
Demolition for both pools is expected to begin next year, then they're scheduled to reopen in 2025.
District 1 constituents will have a community space that they can use not only in the summer but winter as well.
This past summer, Hawkins gave out hundreds of summer passes to other pools, which she plans to do again in 2024.
Hawkins told WHAS11 once renderings are approved, she plans to have a press conference giving more insight into what the new Algonquin Park pool will look like.
