LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The three officers involved in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor have not been arrested nor fired, something protesters in Jefferson Square Park say needs to be done.
Louisville is currently seeing its third straight week of protests, as several groups set up camp in Jefferson Square Park and call for justice in Taylor's case.
"It's more than just the Kentucky Alliance out here. We have FIRM, Black Lives Matter, No Justice No Peace - there are other organizations out here," Tyra Walker, co-chair for the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, said.
Walker has participated in protests since they started three weeks ago, saying little has been done to bring justice to the officers connected to Taylor's death. That sentiment has been repeated at all protests, as people await an announcement from Attorney General Daniel Cameron.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer called the length of the case "extraordinarily frustrating," though Louisville Metro police said they believe the case is going faster than most.
In addition to the firing of those officers, Walker said protesters are also demanding the city defund the police department. She said their demand is not about getting rid of all officers, but diverting funding toward other essential services.
"We want wraparound services. We want mental health. We want police reform. We want you to quit policing our people - build relationships with our people," Walker said.
While most protests have been peaceful, tensions have risen in recent days. Police arrested 17 people Wednesday morning after protesters blocked intersections in downtown Louisville.
One protester was hit by a car during those demonstrations, and LMPD said they are searching for the driver.
