Louisville Water fixes water main break on Baxter Avenue, traffic lanes flowing both directions

One southbound lane is being used for northbound traffic until Louisville Water can replace the concrete.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Water has fixed more than 20 water main breaks, mostly in neighborhoods, since the holiday weekend began according to officials.

In a statement sent to WHAS11 News on Tuesday, a Louisville Water spokesperson said while crews fixed the water main break on Baxter Avenue, the "actual" northbound lanes remain closed until they can replace the concrete.

However, one southbound lane is being used for northbound traffic instead so traffic is flowing in both directions she said.

She said Louisville Water has also received more than two dozen calls about customers not having water and it turned out the customers' pipes had frozen.

While Louisville Water can't do anything if that happens, she recommended following these steps to prevent frozen pipes:

  • Wrap exposed pipes with insulating material
  • cover the outside vents to prevent winter winds from freezing the pipes
  • turn off outside faucets and disconnect garden hoses
  • close the garage door if your house has a slab foundation

She said it's also best practice for customers to know where their water shutoff valve is, in the case pipes do freeze, as this should "help avoid a mess if the pipes burst."
