Kentucky state senator announces return of 'Coat A Kid' initiative; How to donate

This year, the coat drive aims to collect 700 winter coats for children in need.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky state senator from Louisville announced Monday the return of the annual "Coat A Kid" drive thanks to a partnership with Metro Councilman Khalil Batshon and other community organizations.

Senator David Yates said this year's coat drive aims to collect 700 winter coats for children in need, all in memory of Chase Gavin. Gavin was a former District 25 staffer whose dedication and efforts were instrumental in the success of past coat drives.

All donations received as part of the drive will be given to Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) students through Family Resource and Youth Service Coordinators throughout the district.

"This is the time of year where it really is just beautiful to see every single person in our community stepping up and saying 'what can we do to make this a joyous season?'" Ashley Deringer, with local nonprofit 'I Would Rather Be Reading', said. "Having this opportunity for children to go home with coats and relieving that barrier for families is a huge deal and I urge everyone to make a donation if you can."

How to donate coats

The community is encouraged to participate in this year's "Coat-a-Kid" drive by dropping off new or gently used coats, gloves and scarves at the following locations:

  • Stomping Grounds Coffee on Dixie Highway
  • Shirley's Way on Dixie Highway
  • Any of Derby City Pizza's locations

Donations are accepted up until Friday, Dec. 15.
