Louisville Zoo celebrates 'World Water Day' to highlight importance of clean access to water

The Zoo was joined by WaterStep and the Louisville Water Company for activities with animals and teach visitors about the importance of clean water.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Zoo celebrated access to safe, clean water with special activities for its animals.

The Zoo held the event with WaterStep and the Louisville Water Company to mark the start of World Water Week.

WaterStep donated six “WaterBalls” to Zoo animals including the bears at Glacier Run for enrichment activities while visitors learned about the importance of clean water.

The Louisville-based nonprofit focuses on sustainable solutions to safe water technology.

WaterStep created the water balls that help women and girls in developing countries transport water more efficiently.

Access to clean water is critical for both humans and animals.

WaterStep has been in Louisville for 30 years and has brought safe water and disinfectant to more than 14 million people in more than 70 countries.

World Water Week was established in 1991 to address global water issues.

According to the organization’s website, they develop solutions with groups around the world while discussing water-related challenges and topics including food security, health and agriculture.

World Water Week runs from Aug. 25 through Aug. 29.
